Poetry Thursday

Why I Wake Early

Hello, Sun in my face.
Hello, you who make the morning
and spread it over the fields
and into the faces of the tulips
and the nodding morning glories,
and into the windows of, even, the
miserable and the crotchety--

best preacher that ever was,
dear star, that just happens
to be where you are in the universe
to keep us from ever-darkness,
to ease us with warm touching,
to hold us in the great hands of light--
good morning, good morning, good morning.

Watch, now, how I start the day
in happiness, in kindness.

Okay, you're one of my best friends so can I be honest? Here goes, not many poems really HIT me. Some of them sound nice and some of them have nice lines (I know I sound like an idiot here) but is appreciating poetry like appreciating fine wine? Give it time and keep trying? Let me know because I feel like I'm missing out.

Oh, and I tagged you for a morning person. I used to be one...then I had kids.

LC: It's like a new way of looking at things. Its probably not for everyone, but you love reading, so I'd be willing to bet that you'd appreciate poetry more than a lot of people. It does take effort--more than just reading, so I can't always just go and read poetry and get it. I have to be in the mood to put some concentration into it. It helps to read it out loud (like in the challenge this week), but I always feel cheesy unless I'm alone (there's a little confession for you--I read poetry out loud when I'm alone) You kind of have to read between the lines sometimes. There's usually more imagery and emotion than in other writings, so most likely the people who are more into poetry than others are emotional, deep thinkers, creative...

I guess sometimes a poem hits me harder than anything else. Words can be an art form, too.

I'm not an expert by any means--this should be opened up to other poetry lovers--

If you (the reader)have anything to add or take away from my comments, go ahead--discuss...

Beautiful poem...I never appreciated poetry until I had to TEACH it to 8th and 9th graders. I know there are some people who never have to work to appreciate and love it (my husband) and others of us who didn't love it to start (like fine wine) and have to try a little harder. But I have a feeling if poetry doesn't HIT us without trying, we never truly love it the way people do that never try.

I agree with Brittany that it can be deep and emotional and we have to be tapped into that side to 'get it' which unfortunately I'm usually not!
