Half of my face is paralyzed and I am thankful.

IMG_1786

I’m serious, too.

I got Bell's Palsy and suddenly the doctors knew what was wrong with me: Lyme disease.

I have been in so much pain. I can’t emphasize that enough. PAIN. I could hardly move because every move was painful. Excruciating. My back/neck and shoulder were getting worse and worse no matter that I got a cortisone shot and have been in physical therapy for the past two-three months. The doctors were talking surgery on my spine and my stomach was nauseous from taking 15-20 pain killers a day. I was spending a lot of time in tears and a lot of time trying to learn to live with chronic pain, but not doing very well at it. We scheduled an MRI and I filled a prescription for Vicodin.

Then my tongue went numb and my hearing went wacky and my eye started twitching. The next afternoon the left half of my face went tingly and numb. That was scary.

After spending the evening in the ER, I woke up the next morning and realized that my prayers had been answered because although I still didn’t feel WELL, I woke up and my pain had decreased significantly. I probably got the best sleep I had gotten in 6 weeks (in spite of my eye being taped shut with scotch tape).

I can turn my head!

I can reach! I can pick up my babies! I can bend! I can sit at the computer!

I have a lot of catching up to do. And I’ll be doing it without all my pain meds.

It’s a good day, friends. A good day

Bless you Bless you Bless you!! I am grateful for perspective. Seriously, bless you. I hope it just keeps getting better. (and I will try not to feel guilty about the time that Carrie had Bells Palsy and we kind of laughed at her...I mean, with her.)

I got Bells Palsy a couple years ago. Lasted about 2 months. Really odd. Was in the ER for hours while they figured it out. Sounds like that is the least of your worries though. Hope that now they know what is going on you can feel better and your taste on half your tonuge comes back because really that is the worst part about it!

Yay! I'm so glad they have found out what's been going on with you. You've been in my thoughts and prayers. I was so sad to see the pic of you, but I'm happy that things are getting better. Yay for medicine and the right medicine for the illness!
Thank Goodness, I hope things mend up fast and you can enjoy the rest of your summer! XOXOXO Rachie!

Brit - how were finally diagnosed? did they find out during a blood test? that is unreal that it had to get to that point!! :( My mom had lyme a few years ago and after not feeling well for a few days, one morning, she could not get out of bed. Really scary stuff!
There is a fascinating documentary called "Under Our Skin" - it's on Netflix streaming too if you have that. I watched it and was stunned. In the past 3 weeks I have had 2 friends with lyme. That is really crazy.
I am SO GLAD you are doing better.

Oh. My. Goodness. I wish I could babysit for you or bring you meals! I'll send lots of prayers. You are such a pioneer/trooper/inspiration/supermom. I am so tired thinking about all that it entails. Bless you!

Oh, Brittany! I'm so glad I checked your blog. I'll pray for you. I can't imagine how awful everything would be with Lyme disease. My neighbor had it for a very long time before they figured it out.

I'm sending all my love and thoughts your way, and I hope things get better and better.

Reading your latest blog post reminds me of that Mother Theresa quote:
"I know God does not give me more than I can handle, I just wish He did not trust me so much"

Really... Lyme disease and Bell's Palsy! I am so glad you are without so much pain. Only a close God could get you through something as hard as that.
Blessing on you and your beautiful family.
Cheers,
Leah
